Drillers sign two Swedish Defensemen

The Louisiana Drillers of the NA3HL, would like to announce the signing of Swedish defensemen Hampus Ohlsson-Ornelius and Joel Liljegren for the 2022-23 season. Coach Weingartner was thrilled with filling our import spots with players that have played together for the last couple seasons, saying, “It is a perfect scenario for us in Lafayette, having the connection with Robert Spath of Nynashamns has opened doors for a number of players over the years, creating opportunities for Swedish players to play in the US as well as US players going to Sweden to play.

Hampus Ohlsson-Ornelius is a 2003 born, left-handed defenseman that played in 20 games at the J20 level for Nynashamns, scoring 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 points, he also racked up 93 minutes in penalties. He also registered 24 games in Division 2 for Nynashamns scoring 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points and 36 penalty minutes. Listed at 6’4 190 pounds, “Hampus will bring a big presence on our blue line, I coached Hampus’ older brother (Marcus) a few years ago, so I know I am not only getting a good hockey player but getting a good kid that wants to work hard”, commented coach Weingartner.

Joel Liljegren is another left-handed defenseman who will be in his final year of junior hockey in the US. The 6’, 180 pound Swedish defensemen has had a tremendous J20 career playing for Nynashamns, scoring 10 goals and adding 36 assists for 46 points in 55 games, he also had 55 penalty minutes. Joel had his biggest statistical year, scoring 5 goals and 20 assists for 25 points in 27 games last season. “Joel will be a top pairing defensemen for us this year, I expect he will play in all situations, he has the experience at the junior level and look forward to watching him compete this year for the Drillers.” -Weingartner.
